In general use, theory means an idea, untested, unproven. Such as: "I have a theory that every time I fart, somewhere, a monkey turns purple"
In science, that's called a hypothesis.
The word theory has a different meaning in science, than the one we commonly use it for.
A theory is a model made from a large collection of proven hypothesis'.
A theory will make predictions about phenomena, which can be tested and proved.
Thus, a scientific theory is a proven set of facts.
People have this notion that theories get promoted to laws when they're proven true - this is incorrect.
Laws and theories share the same status above the hypothesis.
Laws describe HOW things work: Newton's laws of motion
Theories describe WHY things work the way they do: Einstein's theory of gravity
Both laws and theories are made up of proven hypothesis'.
So don't be ignorant and say that evoloution isn't proven, it's been proven a hundred times over.
