Karl Pilkington and the nature of infinity

I've becomed obsessed with Ricky Gervais and Karl Pilkington. In this clip Gervais starts to laugh at Pilkington for "nat being able to understand the nature of infinity"

Ricky says that if an infinite number of monkeys type random shit you'll eventually have the complete works of Shakespeare. Karl says its nonsense.

I'll have to agree with Karl but for different reasons. The works of Shakespeare represent a possible sequence that can be created from a typewriter, but this does not mean it could be achieved without intelligence. reason being it is impossible to achieve "all possible results" of written paper since its infinite. therefore its possible that the monkeys can go on forever creating something other then the works of Shakespeare. there will always be an infinite number of alternatives other then Shakespeare, and there is no pattern guiding the monkeys to even write in english, much less anything comprehensible. thus its bollocks.

Anyone seen his new show An Idiot Abroad?

It's amazing the way he degrades Anne Frank to 'a squatter with a diary' and Rosa Parks as 'lazy'.

    your logic is flawed,
The works of Shakespeare represent a possible sequence that can be created from a typewriter, but this does not mean it could be achieved without intelligence
it means exactly that this could be created without intelligence, if shakespeare represents one possible sequence out of an infinity of possible sequences it stands that it is necessarily possible for monkeys to write shakespeare, you can't say that one outcome is not possible when you have an infinite set of possible outcomes

    here is your flaw
reason being it is impossible to achieve "all possible results" of written paper since its infinite. therefore its possible that the monkeys can go on forever creating something other then the works of Shakespeare. there will always be an infinite number of alternatives other then Shakespeare,
there is nothing stating that the monkeys have to go through "all possible results" before randomly creating shakespeare. yes there are an infinite number of other possibilities besides shakespeare that can be worked out but nothing says that all possible sequences have to be achieved before shakespeare is randomly created. and further to say that the works of shakespeare cannot be a possible outcome is just plain wrong, if you have an infinite set then it holds that shakespeare is one of those infinite possibilities.

i have recently watched "an idiot abroad" it was pretty entertaining, i will be watching it again

you know you boy ricki is godless heathen right?

It's just enough to say, that given an infinite amount of time, then every possible permutation of objects, events and scenarios WILL happen within the laws of physics. Not only will they occur once, but also an infinite amount of times. The human brain is not wired to fully comprehend the nature of infinity as it has no need to do so.

You're making too many assumptions. Maybe the same thing will just be repeated for an infinite amount of time.

How can you be sure that the universe(s) and what caused them are infinitely random?

This is true, but it applies to you as well.

Karl Pilkington is an original thinker.

Ricky Gervais is a shrill, annoying cunt who just repeats loudly whatever received wisdoms are currently in vogue.

I'm making no assumptions at all. Every possible scenario within the laws of physics will happen. And not only will they happen once, they will happen infinitely.

Randomness has no bearing upon infinity at all. See above point re: everything within the laws of physics will happen.

I can't see where I've given you the idea that it doesn't.

    Only compared to yourself.
