    Maggots only eat dead flesh. They don't eat things that are alive. Therefore he probably had some kinda horrible infection or perhaps even gangrene. Those maggots ate the dead flesh and stopped the necrosis of his penis. I'll bet you anything, that guy still has his dick and is alive and well.
