Utah police arrest three in torture-beating death of disabled woman Christina Harms
Three people entrusted with caring for a disabled Utah woman were instead arrested in her death, suspected of binding, beating and torturing the helpless victim.
Christina Harms, 22, was found dead in her suburban Salt Lake City home with bruises all over her body, said police spokesman Justin Hoyal.
Her attackers stuck a hot pepper seed in the victim's eye, then wrapped her arms and hands in bandages so she couldn't stop the burning sensation, Hoyal said.
Police were called to Harms' Kearns, Utah, home on Friday by a 911 call reporting a possible overdose.
What they found on arrival was far more disturbing: the slain victim's bruised body with marks on her wrists and ankles, indicating she was bound.
Inside a closet protected by an alarm system, police say they recovered a metal bar and plastic ties apparently used in the abuse. Police said it was possible the victim was bound almost like a crucifixion, with her arms tied to the bar and her feet bound.
"This is a sad, disturbing case," said Hoyal.
Harms, a victim of fetal alcohol syndrome, "was never quite capable of taking care of herself," said her cousin, Lyle Chapin, to the Deseret News.
Arrested and jailed was the victim's live-in caregiver, 27-year-old Cassandra Shepard. She was held for investigation of domestic violence murder and obstruction of justice.
Shepard's mother, Sherri Beckering, and her husband, Dale Beckering, were held Monday for investigation of abuse, neglect or exploitation of a disabled adult.
No bail was set against any of the suspects, and no charges were immediately filed.
But an autopsy done by the state medical examiner found "significant injuries" to Harms, consistent with the evidence found in the death house, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.
