BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Battle Creek man is in trouble after police say he stole a Lifecare Ambulance.
The man had called the ambulance to his home around 1:42 Sunday afternoon complaining of a sore throat.
When the emergency crew arrived at his house the man was not inside.
Then they heard the siren on their ambulance going off outside. The man had hopped into the $250,000 truck and was driving away.
Officers said that the man drove to the Pizza Parlor restaurant at the corner of Custer Drive and Michigan Ave. At one point he made a call on the radio saying, "breaker, breaker 1-9, I'm in an ambulance."
Police say that the ambulance was tracked via GPS and reached speeds up to 70 miles an hour while the man was behind the wheel.
Officers took the 72-year-old man into custody a short time later. He will be undergoing a mental evaluation.
Neither the ambulance or any of the equipment in it was damaged.
